$6 Can Save a Life
Did you know that for just $6 a month, we can feed, educate and share the Gospel with a child? That’s only 23 cents a day. Knowing that just $6 can save a life is part of what drives us to do as much as we possibly can.
Over the years, what began as simple feeding programs has transformed into so much more. For many children, these outposts are a home away from home. They receive not only satisfying meals, but also the basics of a good education.
They learn how to read and write—skills that most of them aren’t being taught anywhere else…skills that will give them a greater opportunity to have a better life in the future. And most importantly, they are taught God’s Word and about His personal love for them.
Safety and Love Along with a Nutritious Meal
Some children who come to our centers have experienced the nightmare of neglect and abuse. Others are loved but forced to work due to extreme poverty. Still others come from homes with parents who are physically disabled or who make their living by prostitution. In fact, for many young girls, the care and education they receive at our feeding centers are the only things that stand between them and a similar fate.
And our impact goes far beyond the lives of the children. Because of our compassionate outreaches, many of their parents accept Christ and begin to attend the local churches as a family. In fact, we are seeing whole communities gradually change as we focus on simply providing meals for the children and meeting their needs.
Buses Deliver Food, Education and a Fresh Start to Children in Cambodia
In 2008, we launched several new feeding projects, including our mobile feeding buses in Cambodia. It’s one of the saddest places in Phnom Penh, Cambodia: a sprawling 100-acre garbage dump where hundreds of children work. Toiling through the mountains of trash as early as 3 a.m., the children hope to make 50 to 75 cents a day to help feed their families.
This is the reason we rebuilt two buses into mobile feeding and education centers. We wanted to establish a place where children could eat a good meal, take a shower and learn basic reading and writing skills. Each bus arrives every morning to offer the children breakfast. Then team members teach the children how to read and write and, most importantly, tell them all about Jesus.
This past year, we also started new feeding programs in Lesotho, Burundi and Malawi, and we have even forged a new partnership in Haiti, allowing us to feed more than 5,600 people a day.
Over 11 Million Meals Served in 2007
In 2007 we provided 11.1 million meals to some of the most impoverished people in countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burundi, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Russia, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Thailand, United States, and Zimbabwe.
We are feeding more than 30,000 children a day across the globe, and Dave and Joyce have set a goal to one day be able to feed 1 million children every day.
